Desiderius Erasmus


Desiderius Eramus:






Desiderius Erasmus was born on October 28 1466. When he was born his parents were still unmarried. His parents names were Roger Gerherd and Margaret Brandt. He also had a brother named Gerhedson Gerherd. Both their names meaning "beloved" in Latin.












When he was four year's old he started going to school. He had the best education a kid could get. His first school he ever went to was Gouda Holland school. He attended and got educated in may Monastic schools. When he was 9 years old he went a Deventer school where his natural academic ability stood out.







When he was 13 years old his parents died because of the plague, and he was left with his three guardians. His three guardians wanted him to become a monk because they thought it was the easiest way to dispose of ward. But I failed becoming one. Soon after my parents died my health and my education was poor and weak, and was not doing so well when he was growing up.












When he was 18 years old he took his vows and became a Canon Regular in the Augustan ministry in Stein, near Gouda. For the next 5 years he stayed at that monastery. During that time he was secretly reading several books of the best Latin authors. Then he realized that his life's work relied beyond the cloisters. Then things turned around for him and he was invited to the Bishop of Cambray, to live with Henry de Bergis as his secretary. After taking orders, the Bishop enabled him to go to Paris University to study classical literature.


In Paris he studied Ancient Greek and mastered and he became known as a very fine scholar. He met many people in England like Henry VIII. Over the next 10 years of his life he divided his time between France, England and his homeland the Netherlands. He also wanted to keep in touch with his English humanists. He spent 3 years in Italy. Then he went to England for his 3rd time. During that time he stayed at Thomas More's house writing one of his famous books "The Praise of Folly".




In 1503 he wrote another famous book called "The Christian Knight". He believed that rational piety and he took a critical attitude for superstition. He was always brilliant and was the most important German leader. His religious was entirely humanistic. He was famous in life because he was one of the best humanists ever. He was also famous because he wrote many famous books like The Praise of Folly.







On July 12, 1538 he died. Many people do not know how. During the end of the time he accomplished making the first ever Greek Text Book! But he also befriended many of his English humanist. He died in Basel, Switzerland.
